My Autumn Empire // New Album // Pre-Order

Its with great excitement that we can finally reveal details of the forthcoming My Autumn Empire album, ‘The Visitation’, which is the latest solo album from Ben Holton of epic45.

The Visitation - Cover

‘The Visitation’ takes its name from an early 80’s Doctor Who story in which an alien crash lands on Earth and was part of the inspiration for the album, but Holton expands on the concept with humour and draws a comparison to real life events that affected him at the time.

“It’s also homage to the 70s/80s sci-fi I was watching at the time with all the stagey acting, strange atmospheres and Radiophonic synthesizer sounds that come with them, sounds that have definitely had an impact on the music. Also to the outlandish concepts that drove a lot of the ELO albums I was listening to, in particular the 1981 album ‘Time’ about a man who gets stranded in the future and attempts to have a love affair with a robot.”

However, with tracks such as ‘Andrew’, ‘Where’s Everybody Gone?’ and ‘It’s Around’ the focus shifts to how we can alienate ourselves from social interaction and engagement in the outside world by immersing ourselves in media and fantasy.

“Musically, ‘The Visitation’ hits such diverse reference points as ELO, 10cc, Sparklehorse and The Wedding Present. I also think there’s an influence of some of the American ‘indie’ music I enjoyed in the latter half of the 90s, things like Grandaddy, Pavement and Sparklehorse.”

epic45 // Monument EP // CD Pre-order details & Video

Originally released as a limited 10” vinyl on French label Monopsone as the Fragments EP, this collection saw epic45 stripping away the layers of processed sound and instrumentation that characterised their last album ‘Weathering’, revealing the bare bones of their sound. Sparse, resonant drum loops frame a bed of warm synths, chiming electric guitar and clear vocals, making these four tracks the most direct the duo have sounded yet.

In addition to the three original songs, the EP includes an inventive cover of the Tears For Fears song ‘Ideas As Opiates’ from their album The Hurting. Musically, throughout there are echoes of Talk Talk, The Montgolfier Bros, Depeche Mode, The Durutti Column and Robert Wyatt. This new version now features two new tracks: a beautiful remix by the electro minimalists ISAN and a collaborative re-working of the track ‘Monument’ featuring Ian Crause of the legendary and influential ‘post-rock’ band, Disco Inferno.

Limited Edition 6 track CD EP in jewel case packaging will be released and shipped on Monday 3rd February 2014.

The digital version will be released on the same day via our Bandcamp page and the usual online retailers.

Haunted Woodland – Volume 4 // Surfacing…

Happy Halloween folks,

As has become tradition on this date for Wayside and Woodland, we have some unexpected but exciting news about the latest addition to our long-running ‘Haunted Woodland’ series…

Last year’s release by Charles Vaughan was supposed to be the final instalment but then our good friends Surfacing were commissioned by the art organisation Ordinary Culture to write and perform a work inspired by Dukes Wood – an area of woodland in central Nottinghamshire that was home to the UK’s first commercial oilfield – and it seemed like too good an opportunity to pass up.

Across four gurgling, spluttering tracks of broken occult techno and ghostly industrial noise, Surfacing delve deep into the eerie beauty of Dukes Wood. Here, nature is explored not as a restorative refuge from modern life, but as a dark ecology central to (and threatening) our civilization.

The three parts of ‘Black Corpse of the Sun’ were recorded live at Dukes Wood; ‘Oilmuzak’ was recorded at Surfacing’s HQ in Nottingham.

The limited edition 50 copy pressing of the 4 Track CDr in card sleeve with booklet is available to pre-order* now via our online shop.

1. Black Corpse Of The Sun, Pt. 1 – 0.86
2. Black Corpse Of The Sun, Pt. 2 – A Star Of Two Sides
3. Black Corpse Of The Sun, Pt. 3 – Daloway Dub
4. Oilmuzak

*Item will be shipped on Monday 18th November

Some of their previous work can be heard over at the Surfacing Soundcloud page.

Heres the full album info :

Tŷ is the fourth album on Wayside and Woodland from Shropshire based multi-instrumentalist, Eric Heath. Born in Athens, Georgia, he was brought up in London and moved to Shropshire at the age of 6.

The album is Welsh-language pop music bursting with space, texture and the joy of collaboration, incorporating a winding collection of themes, topics and styles. The absurd humour of Ivor Cutler and the laconic delivery of Kevin Ayres are strong inspirations, along with a growing interest in classic supernatural fiction.

The increasingly mundane mass entertainment culture convinced Heath to bin his TV, eschew the cities and instead concentrate on his Welsh language studies. The music and poetry of this historic language helped Heath to research the history behind much of the borderlands he calls home; the simmering politics ingrained deep in the memories of friends over the border, the drowned valleys and the crushing of an area rich with mythology and strong in identity.

Heath delved deep into these stories, and with Tŷ he satirises his discontent with the world around him. He shares a kinship with the kaleidoscopic, politically fired pop music released through the fiercely Welsh Ankst and Sain labels and draws on the pioneering space symphonies of Joe Meek, fusing them with the low season tranquillity of Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci.

Tŷ also features substantial contributions from members of epic45 as well as Lukas Cresswell-Rost (The Pattern Theory), Joe Cave (Babytwin) and Elaine Reynolds (Fieldhead/The Boats).
